The effect of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on continuous and Interval anaerobic performance on active girls

Authors

Abstract:

Background and aims: : Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on the performance of continuous and intermittent anaerobic function in active girls. Materials and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental, applied and single-blind cross-sectional study. In this study, 12 active girls from Ahvaz participated in this study voluntarily. Subjects performed a continuous test (first week of supplementation and then 3 days of placebo again) and periodic testing (first week of supplementation and 3 days of placebo again) for two weeks. 90-60 minutes before the tests, the supplement group consumed sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g / kg body weight) and the placebo group consumed sodium chloride (0.045 g / kg body weight). Blood lactate level was measured 5 minutes after continuous and intermittent anaerobic activity. Also, the two variables of fatigue time in the continuous test and mileage in the periodic test were calculated.. Results: The results showed that after consumption of sodium bicarbonate in blood lactate indices after both intermittent and continuous anaerobic activity and also the distance traveled by periodic activity, a significant difference was observed between placebo and supplement (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the time index of fatigue and continuous activity (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that consumption of sodium bicarbonate at a dose of 0.3 g per kg of body weight improves the interval anaerobic performance in active girls.
